We don’t really know when it started but ‘Busy’ became the standard answer when friends asked how things were. Our calendars, wardrobes and homes are full to the brim and multitasking is revered as a God-like trait. Saying no is hard and #FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is definitely a deterrent to becoming a minimalist from a busy life.
However, there is so much our body and soul can take, and though our lives may be full with social media posts and images, though there’s plenty of clothes and things in the home, why are people still so unhappy and stressed, tired and lonely? A new concept has emerged and it’s called the minimalist life, a life where you learn to declutter your life and your mind so you can be happier and free. We dare you to try these ideas!
1. Unplug For An Hour Each Day

Did you know that we pick up our phones to look at them a whopping 150 times a day? That is about once every 7 minutes. Is that going to be our new attention span? Have a daily Earth Hour and give your eyes a rest from any phone, iPad, tablet, laptop and TV. Think of all the electricity you are saving! Watch this eye opening video about ‘Looking Up’
2. Do Not Multitask Relationships

Multitasking is the expected standard for anyone. But there is only so much our mind can focus on. Choose what is important and focus on the eyes and attention to your loved ones in front of you. Simplify your life by doing just one thing at a time…especially when it comes to people who matter.
3. Savour The Moment

No one loves doing chores but get the clutter out of your mind by being 100% in what you are doing. Washing the dishes is the worst but if you think about the reason behind it, it doesn’t seem too bad anymore…the good food you had, the great company you had it with and the blessing to have bountiful resources. I’m sure you have experienced how annoying it is to talk to someone to find he or she focused on their phone, or perhaps you have been guilty of doing this to people?
4. Exercise Without Music

Music while we exercise just numbs from what we are doing. Run through all the roller coaster thoughts by letting it flow at the same time letting the adrenaline do it’s job and heal your soul with a smile. It’s not easy, but it teaches you to focus your mind and self, and is considered a form of meditation!
5. Food Without Instagram

The world would not end if there is no instagram photo of one of your meals. For once, just eat and remember it just by its look, flavour combination and taste. Especially if you’re out with friends. Especially if they are already starving and hangry (hungry + angry).
6. Events Without Facebook

Malaysians love chatting apps so much so that we chat for more than an hour per day instead of call. Party invites are via Facebook and the mail is only for parcels. As stamps are eventually going to become extinct, take the time to make a call or write a letter. Old school is the way to go to surprise!
7. Fight Without Twitter

Fight with your sister then hang your dirty laundry all over Twitter? No thank you. De-clutter your emotions by talking it out and put your pride away as sometimes saying sorry first means a lot more to the other person.
8. Shop For Purpose

Malaysians waste about 8 million kgs of food per day so stop buying food because you think you need it all or need to try something new. Buy enough to last the week and make sure it is eaten. Starving people somewhere else k!
9. Enough Is Enough

Learn how to say ‘No’. ‘No’ to yourself, ‘No’ to family, ‘No’ to friends and definitely ‘No’ to work. Take care of yourself first before investing into others.
10. Time Is More Precious Than Money

Time is plentiful but limited and irreversible. It is so precious that we need to stop taking it for granted. Your overbooked ‘busy’ schedule is not an achievement. Take some alone time. Travel on your own. Invest in self-improvement.
11. You Gotta Let Go

Smell the roses! Enough said…keep life simple. Life’s too short to stay angry, hurt, betrayed, and bitter, plus all the negatives feelings just eat you up inside and does not normally affect the person that inflict it. Let go and be grateful for the life you have, you are certainly more fortunate than others, so live in the moment, and be kind.
12. Say Thank You

For everything! Gratitude shows us the bigger picture in life.
Cut out the ‘busy’ to stop being overwhelmed and burnt out. You hold the choice in your hands…take it!
So, which do you think will be hardest for you to do?
