Usually buying the cheapest price on the shelf, the organic section at the supermarket is usually bypassed really quickly with a sceptical glance followed by mumbles of crazy people paying double or triple the price for food. That is until one day, a well meaning work colleague gifted a tray of organic eggs because she had too much. Obviously she gets paid loads more than me…rich!
But despite the grumbles, dinner was followed with much anticipation and gentleness at the precious cargo which also revealed that these organic eggs were W-H-I-T-E, not the usual brown. Not only that, the yolk was bright O-R-A-N-G-E like the sun, not a pale yellow. What in the world is going on! The taste was amazing and beyond compare…but is it really worth the extra moolah? 1. Size And Shape

Organic food has weirder shapes and most of the time is somewhat larger. But it doesn’t mean much. Supermarkets look for pretty and similar sizes for ease of sale. Organics can just be the left overs. The only comfort is organic food means grown naturally without chemicals and protected without harming Mother Nature’s process and having to stick to these guidelines is a must, if not they cannot be sold as organic.

Enjoying organic free range food conjures up the image of happy animals roaming the land and eating au natural. This relieves some of the guilt from our impact on Planet Earth and the days where we have too much aircon or waste tonnes of paper. Organic food is kinder to environment because of their requirements so it promotes a feel good glow with it.

Quality stuff goes into producing the food, be it organic feed to pest free mulch. And when good stuff goes in, it creates good stuff such as organic fruits and vegetables having an antioxidant boost equivalent to one to two extra portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Sadly, because there is no long-term studies, they are still debating as some are unable to identify specific fruits and vegetables for which organic appeared the consistently healthier choice.

Our normal food on the supermarket shelves need to be grown quickly and effectively with the most produce that is blemish free to earn money. Artificial pesticides, fertilisers or feed give these plants and animals super sonic growth to quickly mature and be fat, plump and juicy as fast as possible. But taking a long time is not a good thing either. Organic produce is not as widely available as other produce which means, depending on where you live, it may be shipped from far away and, in some cases, may sit longer on the shelf before it is sold. During the lag time between harvest and consumption, certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, can degrade within produce, affecting its nutritional value.

The word ‘pesticide’ just scares everyone with constant nagging from family about reducing pesticide exposure by washing them before eating and by peeling off the outer skin. Keep this chart with a guide on which foods is most contaminated handy when trying to decide if organic is worth the ringgit and cents. While buying organic can sometimes feel that you are being robbed, there are no conditions in the rules that organic growers have to apply to. But loopholes in life exists and therefore while organic certification is a label, it is no guarantee that your meat had a good life. A free range farmer found out the hard way when refused organic status because she preferred cheaper non-organic grain as top-up feed once in a while is worse than locking the hens up but feeding organic.
Despite prices, there is large growth in the own organic lines for the past 12 months so the big questions is would that mean higher prices, less resource or more loopholes?
