The fear of change is in everyone of us. That is why moving is such a stressful thing. Not only is the prospect of change causing sweat and tears but the feeling of being lost in between boxes and boxes of stuff will cause nightmares. Being organized with these packing and moving tips will help drastically when relocating to a new home.
1. Pack By Room
Make sure to pack by room. This makes it easier to unpack later on. Don’t make the mistake of grouping similar things together because it feels more organized as it might work against you later on. As people are creatures of habit, the room where it came from will most probably be the destination for where the box should end up too.
2. Label Everything

Now that you know where the boxes should be going, taking the time to write down what exactly is in each box will help you when looking for something specific. No one wants to spend the first few days of moving looking through every box to find your daughter’s favourite blankie.
3. Colour Code (If Possible)

Colour code the rooms. This way you can put corresponding coloured post it notes on the doors for the rooms it is meant to go in. You don’t even have to re-invent the wheel…just print out these free printables of colour coded moving box labels and stick an extra copy on each door of the rooms the boxes are meant to go into. To go the extra level, use the corresponding coloured tape for the boxes to make it extra easy.
4. Remove Batteries

Remove all batteries from toys, gadgets and appliances to make sure there aren’t any freaky annoying noises or buzzes when they accidentally get switched on during the move.
5. Have Enough Packing Material

Compile all the packing material you will need plus a few extras. Don’t let the lack of tape interrupt your packing groove. Once you stop it is very hard to get back to work!
6. Pack Fragiles Upright

Pack mirrors and plates upright as they are least likely to break. Wrap them in clothes or towels to save on bubble wrap.
7. Get Rid Of Junk

Stop! Don’t even think about packing a single piece of junk. Declutter all your possessions to the bare essentials. Donate what you have not used in a year and trash everything that cannot be fixed. Have a fresh start at the new location.
8. Make A List

Make a moving to do list of what you need done beforehand. Remember to count the total number of boxes for each room and also an overall total. Even better…number them on the boxes too. Try using a moving checklist to help you with the step by step.
9. Keep Things Together

In the rush of packing and clearing out, essential items can easily get misplaced. Tape the screws, cords or allen keys that go with each furniture or electronic onto the item itself. But don’t forget to label the screws, cords or allen keys because they can accidentally fall off.
10. Use Luggage For ‘Right Now’ Items

Give each family member their own personal luggage or suitcase to pack the items they would need for the next few weeks. Remember that unpacking can take several weeks or months!
11. Take A Picture

Don’t go unplugging happy with the cords. Snap a photo beforehand so that you can put it back together.
12. Defrost Fridge One Day Before

Defrost and clean down fridge and freezer at least one day before your move date. Nothing is worse than having to lug a wet heavy mess to the new home. Give away your perishables and store your beloved frozen items at a friend’s place.
Moving can be a lot easier with all these tips. Most importantly don’t be shy about asking for help. Everyone moves and a few extra pairs of hands will keep you sane!
