If you are reading this, chances that you are the type of person who’d rather spend your money for something with a little more value in it when it comes to automobiles. And probably because the current wave of brand new cars priced between RM150,000 to RM300,000 does not quite tickle your fancy.
Well fortunately for us, the used cars market in Malaysia is rife with plenty of alternatives in said price range. Whether it be a sports car for your weekend thrills, a luxurious and spacious family mover, or even a discreet executive saloon for your everyday drive, there is plenty to choose from here. Finding the right one though is down to what specific need you wished to fulfil, and the right website to visit.
Of course, there is always an air of caution when acquiring used cars, but they are indeed manageable if you stick to several simple yet key rules in buying such vehicles. With that in mind, here’s our pick of cars you can buy for said amount of money today according to type and desirability.
1.Toyota Vellfire – the luxury family mover
When it comes to plush and spacious family movers, none come close to the appeal and presence commanded by the Toyota Vellfire. Essentially, the Vellfire model is the more premium variant of the venerable Japanese brand’s Alphard MPV, with this more premium spec variant able to transport six in a slightly more plush and upmarket cabin than the standard Alphard.
A quick scan on this website here for the Vellfire will result in hundreds of entries, but we recommend models not older than 2010 with less than 55,000km on the dash. One prime example is this tasty white offering that’s going for RM159,800. That’s a lot of luxurious real estate and comfort, and it is definitely a worthy option against the current wave of similarly priced yet smaller new Japanese D-Segment saloons.
2. Range Rover – a proper luxury SUV
Of course, when it comes to luxury Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), none come close to the famed British marque. For decades, the Range Rover Vogue and its more sporty Range Rover Sport stands as the final word when it comes to ultimate luxury packaged with all-terrain capability. Whilst new and current versions costs anywhere north of RM850,000, good condition used ones with less than 60,000km mileage go for less than half that!
Here’s our top pick of the crop we found online. Sporting a discreet black paint scheme with a tastefully matching black interior scheme, this 2010 model isn’t too old yet still looks very current with the present times. The icing to this SUV’s cake besides its low mileage are its premium creature comforts that includes electric memory seats, a touchscreen infotainment unit paired with a Harmann Kardon hi-fi, as well as the neat and nifty keyless entry and engine start system. Typically, as with most continentals, all it needs is a solidly reliable and resourceful mechanic or garage for long-term bliss.
3. BMW 5 Series – the executive saloon you’ve always wanted
If you are fortunate enough to have a not-so-sizable family and the desire for a car that is both plush and sporty, then look no further past the BMW 5 Series. Now in its sixth generation, the 5 Series has long stood as the benchmark in the mid-sized premium saloon segment and, if this matters, we also need not mention the fact that the famed Bavarian badge sends out a clear message of your successful career path.
Of course, a brand new face-lifted 520i will cost you about RM367,800, but if you dwell into the second hand market, you could indeed acquire a current generation pre-facelift 5 Series (chassis code F10) with less than 55,000km on the clock at a significantly reduced price. Prices start from as low as RM160,000 for cars from 2011 and newer, but you’d probably want to go for our top pick: this fully loaded 2012 528i M Sport. This particularly discreet yet tasteful model is going for RM227,800, which is indeed a bargain compared to the brand new entry level model.
Again, being a continental car, all you need is a mechanic that’s both reliable and resourceful for the long run. Other things you should look out for are ones with good service histories as these new generation BMW engines with both direct injection and turbochargers are known to need a little more pampering than usual.
4. Toyota Harrier – the perfectly discreet daily
Say you wanted a plush high-riding SUV that isn’t as large as a Range Rover and one that came standard with bulletproof reliability. Our top pick in this demand comes once again from Toyota, this time with its mid-sized Harrier crossover SUV model.
A staple favourite within the local grey import and second hand car scene, the new the sleek new fourth generation model (chassis code XU60) is a hot commodity right now. Offerings on Mudah.my are abundant with the bulk of them carrying reasonable prices for like-new conditions. Our pick amongst the lot is this slightly used dark maroon 2013 model going for RM 195,000.
Complete with plush leather interior, automatic air conditioning and electric seats, this current generation Harrier is one example of the many solid choices widely available in the market at the moment. The reasonable sub-RM200,000 price tag also makes it worthy of alternative against the venerable wave of comparable new D-segment Japanese saloons. Minus the Japanese-spec radios equipped in most, there is little to gripe about this reasonably plush, perky and reliable crossover SUV.
5. Nissan GT-R (R35) – living the boy racer dream
Now, should you have the need for speed instead of family-based priorities, and you wanted a car that means business, you definitely want a Nissan GT-R (R35). Sporting a sleek and aerodynamic looks matched with a potent powertrain and chassis to boot, this is the Japanese sportscar that is able to trump comparable European rivals not just in performance, but also in price.
However, the trouble with the selection of this particular model presently available for sale below the RM300,000 mark is that the bulk of which have been tuned or modified, some extensively with questionable tastes and unguaranteed reliability as well. What you want is one that is somewhat pristine and untouched, and for said budget, you are relegated with models from 2010 and older.
Thankfully, amongst the many tuned and modified offerings, you are still able to find one that is relatively untouched with somewhat low miles like this 2009 GT-R with less than 55,000km on its odometer. Its RM298,800 price tag does sit somewhat on the high side, but you are no doubt paying a premium for one that is near stock and relatively unmodified – exactly what you need with such a breed of performance cars.
Of course, such a specialised car would require equally specialised care, so you will need to invest time to search and secure a specialist garage in order to maintain it. Other than that, this fire-breathing Japanese supercar-killer is second to none in its field, offering a lot of performance for relatively little money.
6. Porsche 911 – a proper connoisseur’s choice
Depending on your age and taste, perhaps the Nissan GT-R is a little too ‘boy racer’ – read immature – for you and you wanted something that’s more proper with a dash of class and a sporting heritage to boast. Whilst Italian supercars are out of reach below RM300,000, one badge seems to stand out well and it is none other than the staple German sportcar marque Porsche.
There is absolutely nothing wrong should you lust for a 911 Carrera, and there are plenty in the second hand market. Good condition used ones with low mileage command anywhere upwards of RM190,000 depending on variant and model year. However, the ones you should aim for are any of the later models from 2005 onwards.
Our top pick from a scan on on our favourite website is this ebony black 2006 911 Carrera 4S with ultra-low mileage that’s up for RM270,000 (Link 6). This particular one has got all-wheel-drive that is powered by the signature and raspy Porsche flat-six sitting in the rear, not to mention a very tasteful interior trim as well. For the money it is asking, we need not mention how good of a deal this used one stands compared to buying a brand new 2015 911 Carrera 4S, which commands a starting price of approximately RM970,000. Again, the only worry here is for one to secure the right specialist garage for long-term maintenance ease.
